An insightful book to read for our generation is Jeffrey D. Sach’s The End of Poverty. This book gives us a realistic approach and insight into the plight of the world and how to address it. We share the same earth and can create sustainable well being for all peoples.

We (humankind) have a problem if there are people dying because they can’t get immunization or vaccines that cost less than a dollar a day. Everyone deserves to have his or her basic health needs taken care of. Some of the major problems in the world can be solved through education and changing simple lifestyle methods. Ignorance in these cases, is not bliss…

We have the technology and ability to share knowledge and build global communities that create solutions to poverty and disadvantaged peoples. It is I think the wealthy nations that need to lead the change and promotion of global solutions.

Bono in the forward of this book says it well.

“We can be the generation that no longer accepts that an accident of latitude determines whether a child lives or dies–but will we be that generation? Will we in the west realize our potential or will we sleep in the comfort of our affluence with apathy and indifference murmuring softly in our ears?”

Step out of your comfort zone and reach for the possibilities of making a difference in the world. How can we be a part of or create companies, communities and groups that are focused on doing actions that create global health and well-being?

Thanks to the Noble Actions of the author Jeffrey Sachs, we have a deeper understanding on how we can together resolve the world’s issues and can see the end of poverty within a lifetime. However, it takes the Noble Action of each one of you readers to make the tiny steps to help the world make its giant leap.

Watching the movie “HOME”, by GoodPlanet.org, the other night, we saw the extreme majesty and beauty of our mother earth, essentially our only home.

Struck by the reality that we as humans have the amazing potential to create out of raw materials tools that can surpass our imaginations and bring such grandeur to our kind. However, the stark reality is that we have used the resources of this earth and stripped it of its animals, plants and natural elements like unrestrained children. Humanity is now at a higher level of education and knowledge than ever before and our actions need to mirror our higher level of capacity. As the movie demonstrates we no longer have the time to waste. We have no time to be pessimistic either and need to act and act quickly.

Since watching this film, I look at things differently. I teach at a University and see the students as agents for change. We can and have to change our direction, creating sustainable solutions and companies that will enhance the world. The students of this generation are the key.

Everyone has the ability to make a change by simply changing our consumption patterns. We need to be responsible not only to our nuclear families and ourselves but also to humankind. We must take to heart that we are living in a world as one big human family. We need to think about where the product is coming from and if its production is done in a sustainable way.

What will the world be like in 15 years from now, when my son will be about 17 years old? Will the young children of today be forced to live in a world of abundance or in a world of scarcity? As an optimist, I believe they will live in a world of abundance, but I am frightful of the possibility of the latter.

Thanks to the Noble Actions taken by the writers and makers of the film HOME, we can have a glimpse into the immensity of the world and how our actions, both positive and negative, can have an impact.
